On May 15, 2009, nearly 40 Chicago area UI co-workers took part in two separate service projects.
Most of the group spent the day at the Marcy Center in the North Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago. The Marcy Center serves the neighborhood with social services that include structured day care and before-school and after-school programs for children ages 2-13.
At the Marcy Center UI employees worked on projects organized by Chicago Cares that included planting and mulching flower beds and planters; constructing a new planter box and a pair of benches; and fabricating 40 mosaic stepping stones for the side yard path to the facility's playground.
The construction group spent the day at a HOW (Housing Opportunities for Women) building that UI recently renovated. HOW provides housing and social services to women who are homeless. UI employees worked on replacing damaged drywall, light fixtures, bi-fold doors, as well as, removing carpet and padding and general clean-up.
