Urban Innovations completes affordable housing project in Evanston

Urban Innovations completed construction of a ground-up, three-story, 16-unit affordable housing complex in Evanston, Illinois, on behalf of HOW, (Housing Opportunities for Women). The Chicago-based nonprofit provides permanent solutions for its clients through prevention strategies, individualized support services and expanded, affordable, supportive housing.

Located at 1305 Pitner Avenue in Evanston, the complex entails eight one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom units, including two ADA-accessible units. Amenities include community spaces on each floor, first-floor storage units, laundry facilities and a 16-space parking lot. The project is expected to receive certification as a green community by Enterprise Community Partners, based on energy-efficient appliances, attention to stormwater management and other environmentally responsive building practices.

“This project advances HOW’s mission to empower individuals and families to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through housing and support services,” said Britt Shawver, HOW’s CEO.

A grand opening celebration on August 23 featured U.S. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky of Illinois’s 9th congressional district, as well as representatives of the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Regional Housing Initiative, each of which helped fund the project.

Urban Innovations, a long-time supporter of HOW, acted as general contractor on this project and Michael Newman of SHED Studio served as the building’s architect. HOW’s Board President is Jim Fox, CEO of North Wells Capital, the investment affiliate of Urban Innovations.
